Concepts that could be taught through this selection: Science lesson on animal features, habitats, and food chain; ELAR lesson on fiction, story elements, plot, etc.
This document was part of a 2nd grade Science lesson I wrote that focused on identifying animal features and how these features are helpful to each animal based on knowledge of the animal's habitat and diet. The lesson began with watching the Pixar short film "Piper" (available to stream on Disney+), a wordless film about a baby sandpiper who learns how to find his own food by running in and out of the waves like the adult sandpipers do. These photocards include vocabulary relevant to "Piper", and for each word, there is an image from "Piper" (allowing students to connect the words directly to the context of the short film) as well as a photograph (giving a real-world image to provide more information about each term and how to apply it to a non-animated context).
